What you'll see in the Danube Delta
The Danube Delta is the largest wetland reserve in Europe and a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1991. Here is what you see most often from the water.
- Pelican colonies
- The Delta hosts the largest colony of great white pelicans in Europe. You'll see them on the lakes and wider channels, in flocks of dozens, especially in the early morning.
- The wild horses of Letea
- Herds of free-roaming horses live around Letea Forest. Letea is the oldest nature reserve in Romania and one of the few sand forests in Europe.
- White-tailed eagles and other raptors
- The white-tailed eagle, Romania's largest bird of prey, nests in the Delta. It is often seen perched on the dead trees along the banks, alongside cormorants, egrets and herons.
- White and yellow water lilies
- In summer the quieter channels are covered with carpets of water lilies. They are protected species — they must not be picked, and fines are steep.
- Mila 23
- The Lipovan fishing village in the heart of the Delta, birthplace of the canoeist Ivan Patzaichin. It can only be reached by water.
- Sulina and the river mouth
- The end of the Sulina branch, where the Danube meets the Black Sea — the easternmost point of Romania.

What a day on the water looks like
We head out of Tulcea on the Sulina branch, then turn into the channels where the engine drops to idle and all that's left is the reeds. From there, the Delta sets the pace.

Before you go
What to bring
The tour is spent almost entirely on the water, under the sun and in the wind. A few things make the difference between a good day and an uncomfortable one.
- High-factor sunscreen — on the water the sun hits you from two directions
- Sunglasses and a hat or cap
- A light sweater or windbreaker, even in summer
- Comfortable shoes that can get wet
- Water and a snack, unless you booked a package with a meal
- A camera or binoculars for birdwatching
